Do Freeze-Dried Dog Treats Need Refrigeration?

Do Freeze-Dried Dog Treats Need Refrigeration?

Last updated: October 2026

No, they don’t.Freeze-dried dog treats are shelf-stable, sealed or opened. Freeze-drying removes almost all the water, which leaves too little moisture for bacteria or mold to grow. Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry cupboard. The one exception is treats you have soaked in water: refrigerate those and use them within a day.

Freeze-dried treats are popular partly because they skip the fridge. But “shelf-stable” does not mean “lasts forever.” Air, humidity and heat still matter, especially for oily fish like mackerel. Here is what actually keeps them fresh, how long they last, and how to tell when a bag is past its best.

Why freeze-dried treats don’t need the fridge

Fresh fish spoils fast because it is mostly water, and bacteria need water to grow. Freeze-drying freezes the fish and then pulls the ice out as vapor under a vacuum, so the water leaves without the fish ever being cooked. What is left is light, crisp and very dry. Our mackerel, for example, is a maximum of 5% moisture.

With that little water, there is nothing for spoilage organisms to work with, which is why single-ingredient freeze-dried treats need no preservatives. It is also why they behave so differently from baked biscuits; our guide to freeze-dried vs. baked dog treats explains the difference.

Pantry, fridge or freezer?

Best

Pantry or cupboard

Cool, dry and dark is all freeze-dried treats need. Keep them away from the stove, dishwasher and sunny windowsills.

Not needed

Fridge

It adds nothing, and taking a cold bag out into warm air makes condensation form inside it. That moisture is what turns crisp treats soft.

Fine for bulk

Freezer

Useful if you buy a big bag and won’t open it for months. Seal it airtight, and let it reach room temperature before opening.

How long do freeze-dried dog treats last?

Unopened

Until the best-by date

Across the industry that is typically 12 to 24 months from production. Always go by the date printed on your bag.

Opened

30 to 60 days

The window most freeze-dried treat makers recommend for best crunch and flavor once air gets in.

Rehydrated

About 1 day, chilled

Once soaked in water, treats are moist food again. Refrigerate leftovers and use them within a day.

Oily fish lasts best at the shorter end. Mackerel is 20% fat, and fats slowly go rancid when exposed to air, light and heat. Once you open a bag of mackerel treats, aim to finish it within a month. Leaner bonito and tuna are more forgiving.

How to store freeze-dried dog treats

  1. Keep them in the original bag. Treat bags are built to block light and moisture. Press the air out before you reseal it.
  2. Seal it every time. An open bag left on the counter can soften in an afternoon on a humid day.
  3. Store cool, dry and dark. A kitchen cupboard away from the stove or dishwasher is ideal.
  4. Fill a small pouch for daily use. Topping up a treat pouch keeps the main bag closed most of the time.
  5. Split big bags. If you buy a 24 oz bag, divide it into a few smaller airtight containers and open one at a time.

Walks and training

A sealed treat pouch is fine all day. Top it up from the main bag rather than carrying the whole bag. Browse our training treats.

In the car

Fine for a day trip, but don’t leave a bag in a hot car for days. Heat speeds up the fats going stale.

Travel and camping

Freeze-dried treats are light and need no cooler. Pack them in a zip bag inside your luggage to keep out damp.

Humid climates

In places like Florida, humidity is the real enemy. Reseal quickly, and use an airtight container if your kitchen gets steamy.

How to tell if freeze-dried treats have gone bad

Freeze-dried fish always smells fishy, so a strong smell alone is not a problem. Throw the bag out if you notice any of these:

  • Soft or chewy pieces that should be crisp, a sign moisture has got in
  • Any mold or fuzz, including white or green spots
  • A sour or rancid smell, like old cooking oil or crayons, rather than fresh fish
  • Clumping or a damp feel inside the bag
  • Dark, discolored patches that were not there before
  • Bugs or holes in the packaging

When in doubt, throw it out. To check a bag before you buy it, see how to read a freeze-dried dog treat label.

Frequently asked questions

Do freeze-dried treats need to be refrigerated after opening?

No. Opened freeze-dried treats are still shelf-stable. Reseal the bag with the air pressed out and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Refrigerating can actually soften them, because condensation forms when you take a cold bag out.

How long do freeze-dried dog treats last once opened?

Most freeze-dried treat makers recommend finishing an opened bag within 30 to 60 days for the best crunch and flavor. Oily fish such as mackerel is best used within about a month.

Do freeze-dried dog treats expire?

Yes. Every bag has a best-by date, typically 12 to 24 months from production for freeze-dried treats. After that the treats lose quality, especially flavor and fat freshness, so go by the date on your bag.

Can you freeze freeze-dried dog treats?

Yes, for long-term storage of unopened or bulk bags. Seal them airtight first, and let the container come fully to room temperature before you open it so no condensation forms on the treats.

Do freeze-dried mackerel treats need refrigeration?

No. Freeze-dried mackerel is shelf-stable like any freeze-dried treat. Because mackerel is an oily fish, keep the bag tightly sealed and away from heat and sunlight, and finish an opened bag within about a month. More on why dogs love it in why mackerel treats suit picky and active dogs.

Can I leave freeze-dried treats in a hot car?

For a day out, yes. For days at a time in summer heat, no. Heat speeds up the breakdown of the fats, which makes treats taste stale or rancid sooner.

What if my freeze-dried treats got soft?

Soft treats have absorbed moisture. If they are only slightly soft and smell normal, use them up within a day or two. If they are damp, smell sour or show any mold, throw them away.

Can I rehydrate freeze-dried treats?

Yes. Soaking them in a little water makes a soft topper for meals. Once rehydrated they are perishable, so serve them straight away and refrigerate any leftovers for no more than a day.
